HISTORY OF THE SMITHVILLE INN

The Smithville Inn stood for more than 200 years in the heart of downtown Smithville, Ohio, facing State Route 585. The land was originally granted on June 25, 1818, to James Hazlett (assignee of Thomas Taylor) by President James Monroe, marking the beginning of the property’s long life as a stagecoach‑era inn.

Throughout the 1800s, the Inn served travelers moving between Akron and Wooster — a trip that once required long stretches on horseback or stagecoach. Its location made it a central stop along historic routes such as the Portage Path/War Trail, offering food, rest, and lodging to generations of travelers.

In more recent decades, the building operated as a restaurant and community gathering place until its closure in 2019, when the owners retired.

WHY DEMOLITION WAS NECESSARY

By 2026, the structure had become severely deteriorated and unsafe. The building’s age, structural instability, and long‑term maintenance challenges made restoration no longer feasible. The Village of Smithville moved forward with demolition to eliminate safety hazards and prepare the site for future use.

Robert’s Demolition & Excavating completed the full teardown of the Smithville Inn with a focus on:

Structural safety — controlled demolition around unstable sections
Community respect — documenting the building’s history and honoring its significance
Site cleanup — removing debris and preparing the property for its next chapter

This project required careful planning due to the building’s age and condition. Our team worked methodically to ensure a safe, efficient, and respectful demolition process.

Although the building could not be saved, its history remains an important part of Smithville’s identity. We’ve shared historical posts, community memories, and project updates to help preserve the story of the Inn even as the structure itself reached the end of its lifespan.
